Mon NaTional Day
Mon National Day is an important cultural event that honors the heritage and history of the Mon people, one of the oldest ethnic groups in Southeast Asia. It commemorates the founding of the ancient Mon Kingdom of Hongsawatoi (Hanthawaddy) in 573 CE, a symbol of Mon sovereignty and unity. Unlike many national holidays, Mon National Day is not religious but historical and is celebrated annually on the 1st waning day of Tabodwe, the 11th month in the traditional Burmese lunar calendar (usually in February). The first official celebration of Mon National Day took place in 1947, a time when Myanmar was approaching independence from British colonial rule. Mon leaders initiated the day to revive and preserve their cultural identity, language, and political aspirations. Since then, the day has become a vital expression of Mon pride and solidarity. Mon communities across Myanmar and abroad mark the day with traditional ceremonies, music, dance, sports, and cultural shows. Mon Revolution Day is commemorated every year on August 31 to honor the beginning of the Mon people’s armed resistance for self-determination, equality, and cultural preservation. This significant day marks the formation of the New Mon State Party (NMSP) and its armed wing, the Mon National Liberation Army (MNLA), which launched their struggle in 1948, shortly after Myanmar gained independence from British colonial rule. The Mon people, one of the oldest ethnic groups in Southeast Asia, had long suffered cultural suppression and political marginalization, especially after the fall of their powerful Hanthawaddy Kingdom. Their revolution aimed to resist forced assimilation policies, protect the Mon language and culture, and demand autonomy within the union of Myanmar. Mon Revolution Day serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by past generations and continues to inspire a strong sense of unity, identity, and hope for peace and federalism.
